The draw for the group stage of the Uefa Champions League will be made on Thursday 25 August 2012. There will be 32 teams in the draw, including 12 previous winners.
The teams will be drawn into eight groups of four teams each on a seeded basis. Matches will start from September 2012 and finish in December 2012, during which time each team will play each of the other teams in the group home and away.
The winner and runner-up in each group will go forward to the knock-out stage. The team that finishes third in each group will have the consolation prize of a place in the Europa League Round of 32. The bottom team of each group will be eliminated.
The road to the second UEFA Champions League final in three years at Wembley Stadium begins on Monday when the draw is made for the first and second qualifying rounds in Nyon.
Six teams will be in the initial stage, played in the first two weeks of July, and 31 other sides come in for the second qualifying round including FC Basel 1893, who made the round of 16 last season. The third qualifying round and play-offs follow as 17 further clubs come into contention for ten available places in the group stage alongside the 22 automatic entrants.
Among that number are all four English contenders: Manchester City FC, Manchester United FC, Arsenal FC and holders Chelsea FC. It will be at Wembley that the tournament concludes on Saturday 25 May 2013, making a swift return to the 2011 final venue to mark the 150th anniversary of the English Football Association.
